Newton Fire and Police departments responded to a fatal wreck around 7 a.m. on I-20 near mile marker 109 westbound, where a grey sedan, driven by Jackson resident Jarvis Walker, 40, had run into the back of a parked tractor trailer.
Fire Chief JC Collins said exactly what had happened was unknown, but it appeared Walker fell asleep at the wheel.
“He came around the curve and hit the truck,” Collins said.
Collins said Walker was killed in the collision.
While LifeCare paramedics checked him for injury, Gabriel Ruiz, the driver of the 18-wheeler, said he had pulled his tractor trailer off onto the shoulder just west of the Newton exit to perform a tire check.
Ruiz said he was inside his truck in the sleeping compartment when the collision occurred. Although he felt, and heard the impact, Ruiz was not injured.
Newton Police Department is investigating the incident.
