As the Christmas season continues to build to a climax this December, the Newton Police Department wants to make sure that everyone has a safe and fun holiday season.
Police Chief Harvey Curry said his department is increasing patrols for the Christmas season, but he is urging everyone to make sure they aren’t being targeted by criminals.
“We are doing all we can to help make the Christmas season safe for everyone, but we can’t be everywhere at all times,” Curry said. “So, we’re asking everyone to please make sure that they do everything they can to deter criminals from targeting them.”
First, Curry recommends that people keep a check on your check-ins via social media apps.
“Most of the time, crime occurs from someone that you know and are probably on social media with, so be sure that when checking into places that you’re not inviting the unwanted Grinches to steal your Christmas joy,” Curry said.
Also, residents are encouraged to lock their doors and check security lights to make sure they are working.
“Most criminals are opportunistic, meaning they are not going to break in unless it’s easy to snatch,” Curry added. “Criminals do not like to be easily seen. Close window blinds and curtains when you aren’t home so that they can’t see the gifts under the Christmas tree.”
Curry also recommended securing your house’s access to the garage by keeping interior doors locked, closing your garage doors and making sure garage door openers aren’t easily seen.
He also said to make sure you’re displaying only the tree, and you’re not showing off the gifts.
“Be sure to bag all boxes following the season,” Curry said. “If you put a 70” TV box on the road, we all know there’s a 70” TV inside your home. Be careful.”
For those who can’t burn or break down their boxes to put them inside trash cans and trash bags, Curry said they are planning to have a dumpster or garbage truck at the police department during the week after Christmas for local residents to dispose of unwanted gift boxes.
And as always, Curry asked residents to always report suspicious activity to the police department by calling 601-683-2041.
