The Newton Police Department has asked Waste Pro to leave a garbage truck at the police station on Decatur street the week after Christmas so that residents won’t have to leave them out by the street.
Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry said that leaving empty boxes for garbage collection at the road can make people a target for thieves.
“If you leave your box for your new 60-inch TV by the road or outside with your trash, criminals will see it,” Curry said. “Then you could be a target of crime. So, you either need to break your boxes down and put them inside trash cans and trash bags, or you can bring them to the police station the week of Christmas and put them in the garbage truck we will have here.”
Curry came up with the idea this year and plans to make this an annual event for local residents.
“We are doing everything we can to make sure our residents stay safe during the Christmas holiday season,” Curry said.
