The Newton Police Department is investigating a gunfire incident in the 100 block of Oak Ridge Drive in which a man suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the foot.
Police Chief Randy Patrick said the 21-year-old victim was taken to Laird Hospital by a personal vehicle in Union after the incident. Patrick did not have the condition of the victim at this time.
At 10:44 p.m. Wednesday, Newton Police assisted by the Newton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of gunshots fired at the residence.
“We responded to the scene and began an investigation,” Patrick said. “Based on the interviews we’ve conducted, it appears like two subjects began firing toward the residence. The residents responded in self-defense. One of the persons went back inside to get a shotgun to fire back at the suspects. After responding with the shotgun, he was trying to go back inside, and it appears like the gun accidentally discharged and struck him in the foot. It does not appear like he was struck by gunfire discharged by the suspects.”
Patrick said they are currently searching for the suspects that initiated the incident, but he said they will not likely be facing charges related to the gunshot wound. He said the suspects came to the scene on foot and left on foot.
“We have a person or persons of interest at this time, but we are not ready to release those names,” Patrick said. “We appreciate the assistance of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department as we investigate this case.”
If anyone has any information on the incident, they are asked to contact the Newton Police Department at 601-683-2041.
