If your family is looking for some low-cost Halloween fun this weekend, look no further than The Roxy in Downtown Newton this Saturday night, as the Newton Theatre Company hosts their inaugural Halloween Family Movie Night and Costume Contest.
Scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and priced at $5 per person (tickets will be available for purchase at the door), families of all ages are welcomed to wear their finest Halloween costumes and enjoy a family-appropriate movie. Due to licensing agreements, The Appeal is not allowed to print the name of the movie, but let’s just say it’s a campy Disney classic involving three witches, kids, a talking black cat, and a stitched-up zombie that helps save the day. More information on the NTC’s Halloween Family Movie Night, including the name of the movie, can be found on the Newton Theatre Company’s Facebook page.
According to Newton Theatre Company Board President Andrea Morgan, the Halloween Family Movie Night is the first of hopefully many family movie nights at the Roxy, and it’s all in the name of initiating more community involvement at the theatre and exposing what the theatre company is all about to those that may have never graced the doors of The Roxy.
“Not everyone enjoys watching or being involved in plays or musicals, so we’re trying to get more of our community involved, and that generally starts with our children. And the more children are involved, the more parents will be involved,” said Morgan.
Morgan said that the theatre company’s inaugural Children’s Camp, which occurred last summer, was their first step at community involvement, adding that they had a great turnout with a group of kids that had a blast learning the art of theatre.
“With our first Halloween Movie Night, we’re just finding a way to give families in our community something fun and affordable to do,” she said. “Plus, it’s a great way to get some in our community exposed to what we do here at The Roxy. We have a lot in our community who have never been in our theater because they feel like it’s an exclusive club. And we don’t want it to feel that way.”
As for Saturday’s costume contest, Morgan said that it’s not mandatory that everyone wear their costumes that evening.
“It just adds a little bit more excitement and fun to a general movie night experience,” she said, adding that there would be some costume awards handed out.
As always, food will be available for purchase that night, including the typical candy, popcorn, and drinks. In addition, there will be some extra tasty offerings available, such as hamburgers and pulled pork nachos, which pairs nicely with a great family movie and an assembly of community members looking to have a great time.
“We would love to have everybody come out in the community to our first, of hopefully multiple movie nights, to celebrate the Halloween season with some family fun.”
