Newton residents gathered Tuesday at the Historic Newton Depot to welcome Dr. Glenda Nickson, who will be joining the staff of Newton Municipal School District as superintendent.
The event, put on by the Newton Chamber of Commerce, allowed local officials, parents and teachers to meet the superintendent, talk about the coming school year and share their well wishes.
Nickson, who was joined at the Depot by her family, said she was honored to be joining the school district and was looking forward to her first year in Newton.
“I just want to first thank the Newton Municipal School Board of Trustees for selecting me on this mission I’m getting ready to take on,” she said. “And it’s always a mission of service. As long as I’m stay in the mode of, I’m serving others, and that’s what I plan to do, serve this community, we’re going to be okay.”
Nickson said the community should know the school board is dedicated to the education of all children in Newton Municipal School District and will do everything in their power to make sure every child receives a quality education.
“I want you to know your school board, they are fully committed to educating all children,” she said. “Not part of them, not three fourths of them, but all children, and making sure they leave the district ready for college and also ready for careers. I’m just excited to be a part of that mission.”
The school board, Nickson said, has pledged to have her back in all matters of safety and academic achievement.
Nickson asked the community for their support as well as she works to get the school ready for the upcoming year.
“As we begin this journey, I just ask for your prayers, I ask for your encouragement and I already know I have your support because you’re here tonight,” she said. “Again, I just want to thank you. I’m excited to be here, and I’m excited to be a part of this great community.
