Funeral services for Royce G. Richardson were held on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Newton County Funeral Home – South. Burial followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.
Bro. Bobby Everett and Bro. Jackie Strebeck officiated. Special music was provided by Mr. William Savell, soloist and Mrs. Donna Creekmore, soloist and instrumentalist.
Mr. Richardson, age 83, of Decatur, passed away Monday, January 16, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a native and lifelong resident of Newton County and was a longtime employee of La-Z-Boy South where he retired after forty years of service. He enjoyed singing gospel music, where the locals will remember his smooth bass voice in solos and quartet singing. He was a Christian by testimony of his faith, and served as a deacon and held memberships with Beat Line Baptist Church at Conehatta, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church at Lawrence, and most recently Pine Ridge Missionary Baptist Church at Lawrence. People will remember him for his love for farming and his cattle. Mr. Richardson will be remembered for his love for his family. He will be missed by his many friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otho and Annie Lois Hollingsworth Richardson; one son-in-law, Billy Davis; and one sister, Jean (Durward) Nelson.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sara Jane Mayes Richardson of Decatur; sons, Anthony Richardson of Lawrence; Mike Richardson (Vickie) of Lawrence and Sammy Richardson of Decatur; daughters, Vicky Davis of Decatur and Becky Culpepper of Lauderdale; ten grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren; one brother, Hubert Richardson (Dianne) and one sister, Florine Addy, both of Decatur; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Josh Richardson, Adam Richardson, Tyler Richardson, Levi Richardson, Seth Richardson, and Chris Culpepper.
Visitation was Wednesday, January 18, 2023 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday.
