Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Evelyn Johnson Bufkin were held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Hickory Baptist Church under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home. Dr. Randy Rich officiated. Burial followed in the Bufkin family plot in the Hickory Cemetery.
Born September 1, 1932, in Lauderdale County, to her parents David Houston and Mabel Moore Johnson, Mrs. Bufkin went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 13, 2025 at the age of 92.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Cayce Bufkin, Jr., her parents; her loving in-laws, Cayce Bufkin, Sr., and Jimmie Laura Mosley Bufkin. She was also preceded in death by her four sisters, Ella Mae Johnson Rainer, Louise Johnson Bishop, Ethel Johnson Steed, and Irene Johnson; her sister-in-law, Clara Bufkin Thomas Sandifer; her brother-in-law, George Bruce Bufkin and son-in-law, Robert Gully.
She is survived by her son, Cayce Wayne Bufkin and his wife, Debra Smith Bufkin. She is also survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Bond, and her husband, Davis, and Janice Bufkin Gully.
She is survived by eight grandchildren, Chad Bond (Jennifer), Chris Bond (Robin), Jennifer Gully McCallister (Dewayne, Dr. Brian Bufkin (Kalla), April Bufkin Walker (Mark), Cayce Ann Bond Lane (Adam), Amanda Gully Burroughs (Brian), and Dillon Gully; twenty great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carol McKee Bufkin.
“Miss” Mary loved her God, her church and her family. She was a lifelong member of Hickory Baptist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a special group of friends at Jack’s restaurant that she enjoyed visiting with every morning.
She was loved by all that knew and loved her and will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Chad Bond, Chris Bond, Adam Lane, Brian Bufkin, Dillon Gully, Brian Burroughs, and Dewayne McCallister served as pallbearers.
Newton County Funeral Home, South Chapel, 100 Old Hwy. 15 Loop, served the Bufkin family.
