It’s too early for the regular season of high school football to be over for Newton County.
Thankfully, we still have two teams that are still alive in the playoffs — Union and Lake. We’re rooting for them to make it a long way.
We like to congratulate all of our teams on a good season. I know some of their seasons ended a little too early. We wish those seniors who played their final games this past week well in their future. It’s difficult to hang up the uniform for the last time, whether it’s a football uniform or a band uniform. And we all hope that our seniors get to delay that as long as possible.
However, this year we are hoping for better luck with our playoff teams.
For the first time since I’ve been here, our football season ended with the first week of the playoffs last year. I hope we don’t make it two years in a row.
In the past four years, we’ve seen Union make a run to the third round of the playoffs. Newton County Academy has been a mainstay in the playoffs, including winning a championship in 2014.
Lake has had a lot of success as well making a deep playoff run three years ago.
We are hoping Union and Lake can have the same kind of success this season. I know it’s been a challenge for everyone around here. Teams have experienced growing pains, and both Lake and Union have overcome a lot of adversity to get to this point.
In my opinion, they’ve had very successful seasons, and anything we get from here is gravy.
For some schools, our attention turns away from football and is now on basketball and soccer. We’d like to wish all of the football and basketball teams good luck.
