Brent Maze: Counting my blessings

On Sunday, I have had the pleasure of attending the Community Thanksgiving Services for Decatur.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about Newton County, it’s that our community really has a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness. During the services at Decatur United Methodist Church, the congregation took time to sing the old hymn “Count your blessings, name them one by one...”

That’s one of the few hymns that will continuously play in my head for the following week. I don’t know if it’s just the melody that gets stuck in my head or what, but it’s a good thing that it does get stuck in my head.

When I start humming it, it’s a good opportunity to take time and think about all of the good things that are in my life. Sure, my life isn’t perfect, but I have plenty to be thankful for.

I am thankful for my family that is so supportive of me. I know I don’t say it that often, but they have been willing to put up with me and all the late nights over the years.

I am thankful that I have plenty to eat each day. I probably eat a little too much, as my doctor can attest to as he has encouraged me to lose some weight during my “healthy you” visits during the past year.

On that front, I am thankful for my health. I am very fortunate to be 39 years old and have had very few medical issues.

I am thankful for my job and my wonderful staff at the Appeal. I also appreciate all the wonderful people that I’ve had the opportunity to meet. I thank you for your patience with me and your support over the years I’ve been here.

I am also thankful for our country. We are still the most powerful and richest country in the world. And our freedom is unmatched in any other country.

I’m thankful for all of the business owners who provide jobs here in our community. Without them and their investment, Newton County and its people wouldn’t be were they are today.

I am thankful for local leadership. We have good people leading our county who want the best for all.

I am thankful for our educators. They have given and are giving all of us an opportunity to succeed in life through the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom.

I am thankful for God, who created this beautiful universe. What a wonderful world God has created.
