Over the last two weeks, it seems like we’ve had a rash of bad news. The Neshoba County Fair announced that it would cancel its 2020 fair. Then less than 24 hours later, La-Z-Boy announced their cuts of 850 workers nationwide, 300 of which were cut here locally.
Both of those announcements are related to the novel coronavirus.
In the sports world, we lost two legendary coaches from SEC lore in Auburn’s Pat Dye and Tennessee’s Johnny Majors. Those are two coaches that really turned things around for their respective programs. Without Dye at Auburn, who knows if the Tiger program would have been middling in obscurity and not had three undefeated seasons over the last 30 years, including one national championship.
Majors is partly responsible for getting the Volunteers to a position to win a national championship in 1998 under Phil Fulmer. (FYI, research the history of Fulmer and Majors. It’s quite interesting.)
Then, of course, our country has been in turmoil ever since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. There have been protests in cities from as small as Philadelphia, Miss., to Philadelphia, Pa.
We have seen people debating the effectiveness of those protests and how rioting and looting should be viewed.
The first week of June has been one of the most difficult of this year, and that says something about this year.
I hope that at some point our country can catch a break. We need a break from the divisiveness.
