This weekend is usually when the Muncy Family gets together in the Smoky Mountains to reconnect and visit with each other for a little while. That’s my mother’s family, and we usually have around 100 or more of us that get together for fellowship and fun.
Much like everything else since the beginning of March, it will look a little different. Well, actually, a lot different. Our normal meeting spot, the Smoky Mountain Home for Children, is not available. Part of the reason for meeting there is our family leaders were once working with the home. But now due to the coronavirus, we will not be able to meet there.
It looks like we’re going to be meeting at a park for the reunion meeting time. Thankfully, the weather looks pretty good for this weekend.
I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to look like right now. I’m sure masks will be recommended, but I’m not sure exactly how much participation we will get from this.
This weekend was also supposed to be Union Day. The festival, which originally began as Country Day, was a time that many families in Union would get together for a family reunion. While some of them will be getting together, especially to celebrate Father’s Day, there won’t be a festival to go along with it.
Last month, the chamber board of directors agreed to postpone the event. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to reschedule, but it’s disappointing not to have the festival, as it was disappointing not to have Loose Caboose.
The reality is that the numbers are rising for coronavirus. Hospitals are now beginning to fill up. If we don’t do something now, it could get much worse in future weeks.
I hope we can get back to it, but for now, we will just do the best we can.
But if you can, wash your hands and wear your masks out in public. That’s the only way we can finally get back to normal.
