Monday is the voter registration deadline for the November general election. While there’s not a lot on the ballot, we will be choosing several important races.
We have two Newton County school board positions that are up for election, although only one of those races has an opponent. We also have a special senate election and the general election for the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s between Michael Guest and Michael Evans in the election.
Both the U.S. Senate and House of Representative seats are important in the current state of our country’s politics especially if the U.S. Senate seat switched to a Democrat for the first time in a long time.
Right now, Republicans hold a 51-47 advantage. So you can see how important every seat is.
After this year’s elections, we will have several big elections in 2019, as most of our state and county elections will be held next year.
So getting registered is very important. As you’re doing it, make sure you’re doing it the right way and you aren’t getting scammed.
Several citizens in northeast Mississippi reported receiving suspicious phone calls today from individuals inaccurately purporting to represent TurboVote, a voter registration service provided by Democracy Works, which advocates for voter participation across the Nation.
“In Mississippi, a citizen can only register to vote by submitting an application in-person at a Circuit Clerk’s Office or by mailing a signed voter registration application to the Circuit Clerk’s Office,” Secretary Delbert Hosemann said. “After registering to vote, a voter must submit a written application for an absentee ballot, which must be obtained from the voter’s Circuit Clerk’s Office.”
