In today’s edition of the Newton County Appeal, managing editor Thomas Howard introduced a new series about what each county government department does.
Today, we are featuring the Circuit Clerk’s office and Circuit Clerk Mike Butler. One thing that Mike has told me in the past is that the community rarely knows what his office does on a daily basis. Obviously, they know he deals with keeping up with records regarding the Circuit Court proceedings, but his office deals with much more than that.
He issues marriage licenses, helps prospective voters get registered for the election and assists with other parts of the voting and election process. If you are qualifying to run for public office, you will go see him.
His office is also involved with jury selection and determining the jury pools for specific terms.
Any type of civil lawsuits are filed in his office, and cases over $3,500 will be filed in his office. Matters involving less than $3,500 normally go to Justice Court.
What we hope with this series is that you will have an opportunity to learn about our public officials and have a better understanding of their role in our government. It’s not just important to know who they are, but what they do.
So I’d like to ask for your help as we continue this series. What I want from you is to let us know what part of government you’d like to learn more about.
How do you let us know? Well, give us a call at 601-774-9433 or email me at bmaze@newtoncountyappeal.com or Thomas at thoward@newtoncountyappeal.com. If you feel better about faxing it, send it to 601-774-9433. Or send it via snail mail at P.O. Box 287, Union, MS.
We’d love to see which offices are interesting to you.
