Brent Maze: Sad to see Fall Festival cancelled

I know I am not alone in this, but it’s rather disappointing to see something go away that has been a mainstay in our community for many, many years. That’s the case for the Friends of Central Mississippi Fall Festival that was scheduled for next week in Newton.

This fall festival has been a great event over the years. Thousands of kids have trick-or-treated down its treat street on the campus of CMRC. It was one of the first places in this area to offer a fall festival of that magnitude. There was no Lazy Acres. There was no Decatur Treat Street. There were few trunk-or-treat events in the area.

Now, there are many of those events going on this year. Schools have events planned. Both Decatur and Newton have events planned with their chambers of commerce. Churches have their own fall celebrations.

The market has become rather competitive for fall festivals.

One of the biggest reasons why the fall festival was held is because it was a huge fundraiser for the Friends organization. It was the sole fundraiser for many years. However, the costs of event have soared in recent years while donations have begun to fall off. Businesses and individuals either reduced their sponsorships or eliminated them altogether.

And unfortunately, there isn’t a good business model for the organization to hold it this year. We hope that the community will rally around the event next year to help bring it back and make it be successful again.

Until then, please help consider helping the Friends of CMRC in its new fundraising opportunities.
