I knew there were going to be problems on Sunday. I had felt this kind of juicy atmosphere a few times in my life. Most recently, I remembered it from April 27, 2011.
That was the day many of us in the South will never forget. It was a day where basically every storm had a tornado with it.
One of the biggest of that day actually happened not far from here. An EF-5 tornado touched down just east of Philadelphia that year and continued on a very long track before lifting in Alabama.
Smithville, MS, also had an EF-5. along with numerous other very strong tornadoes throughout the day.
While Sunday’s weather felt familiar, I’m glad that the result wasn’t as widespread as it was that fateful day nine years ago. I’m glad that very few storms overall formed in the juicy sector that we were in.
That being said, wherever the storm was going to form, I knew it was going to be bad. And they left a long and wide path of destruction.
If you take a look at Southern Pine’s outage map, you’ll get a pretty good indication where the storms went through.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you that were affected by the storm. Let’s hope it is a long time before we have to deal with this again.
