Memorial Day just felt different this year.
Instead of hundreds of people gathering at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery to honor those who gave all, we had no public gatherings.
While we couldn’t do that, I am very thankful that Rep. Randy Rushing, Sen. Tyler McCaughn and American Legion Post 89 Cmdr. Johnny Reeves were able to attend our live streamed virtual gathering. While we couldn’t meet in person, I am glad we were able to provide a service for everyone to stop and remember those who gave all for our country.
While the veterans cemetery couldn’t have a public service, a few from the Newton Flying Club decided to do a flyover at the cemetery for those who were on hand.
While there was no public service at the cemetery, the Mississippi Department of Veterans Affairs did a virtual tribute on social media. It also aired on television locally.
But this year, having the time to reflect on everything actually made the observance more impactful to me. While I enjoy the public gatherings, I sometimes don’t take the time to reflect on what it really means. Hundreds of Newton Countians have given their lives while in uniform to protect our country.
In World War II alone, there were more than 90 of our friends and loved ones who gave their lives for the cause of freedom. (Information from “Veterans of World War II: Newton County, Mississippi”) Many more gave their lives before and since.
I thank you all for helping make our country what it is today. The only way we can show our gratitude is to live our lives to the best that we can and to ask what we can do for our country and community.
