The Mississippi Presidential Primary is nearly here.
Tuesday, we will go to the polls here, along with a number of other states, to select who will win the delegates for the Democratic and Republican primaries in our state.
As I’m writing this column, the Super Tuesday results haven’t come in yet. However, it’s very likely once the results are in, we Mississippians may still have a say in who the Democratic presidential candidate.
On the Republican side, Donald Trump faces no significant opposition to his nomination again.
On the Democratic side, we still have quite a few candidates left. Bernie Sanders as of the time I’m writing is the frontrunner in terms of delegates. He holds a slight lead over Joe Biden. That being said, it very well could have changed with the results of yesterday’s election as you’re reading this now.
Elizabeth Warren is still firmly in the race as far as I know right now. She’s hoping to keep a stronghold on third place through Super Tuesday.
Meanwhile, it seems like other moderates are beginning to drop out, as Pete Buttigieg did this week. Other moderates will likely follow suit after yesterday’s results.
So basically, we are down to a three-person race. And honestly, it’s undetermined if any candidate will reach the magic number of delegates prior to the convention.
If that’s the case, we might have one of the more meaningful conventions in modern history. Personally, I’d love to see it.
It would be great to see Sanders, Biden and Warren make speeches at the convention to sway delegates to go their way. The ratings would be great, and it could honestly take the spotlight away from the incumbent for a little while. And I’m sure Trump will try to take away from that spotlight if the convention meant that much on the Democratic side.
I really love the election process, and I would like to see it carried out to the full extent.
I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that the race stays too close to call until the delegates actually vote at the convention. I enjoy seeing a very close race to the end.
