The scores for the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program are out, and local schools are making big strides of improvement.
Two local school districts were singled out by the Mississippi Department of Education. The Union Public School District was recognized at the No. 8 school district overall in mathematics and had the third biggest growth in the English language arts.
The Newton Municipal School District was also ranked No. 1 in growth for its math scores district wide, more than doubling its number of students who were proficient in levels 4 and 5.
While the Newton County School District wasn’t singled out for its performance overall, the district also saw significant gains in its test scores and outperformed the state average on most if not all grade.
I would like to congratulate all of the students, teachers, parents, administrators and anyone who has played a role in the success of the school districts for this year.
One thing I’ve realized is that it the performance on these test are a reflection of the whole education process. It begins at home and continues to school and to the rest of the community.
And what it shows is that we have a community committed to the education of our students.
The education scores tell part of the success story, but the ultimate goal is to prepare our children to be successful, contributing members of our society. We want our students to have an opportunity to make an honest living. Whether that is by going through the college route and earning an undergraduate or graduate degree or preparing our children to learn a trade and go straight into the workforce right out of high school or junior college.
We hope this inspires everyone to continue the good work and improve every day.
