For a year that it seemed like winter would never end, summer sure did get here fast.
It seemed like we hit the first day of May and we hit 90 degrees. Not only that, the humidity has returned with a vengeance. It’s not only made things very difficult on those working outside on a daily basis, but it has also caused us to see a lot of rainfall i
n the last couple of weeks.
That has affected some outdoor events, such as Union and Lake’s graduation events being moved inside and Monday’s Memorial Day celebration being cut short due to spinoff rain from Alberto.
As usual, it seems like the South gets about one or two weeks if we’re lucky of actual springtime weather. Then, we’re going straight into the 80s and 90s with high humidity.
However, I do think more of us aren’t complaining about the sudden change to summertime as much because we are a little more grateful after seeing near-freezing temperatures in late April. Once July hits, it really doesn’t matter anymore about whether you complain about the weather because it’s going to be hot regardless.
So as we move into our typical summertime weather pattern, please make sure you think about the following heat-related things:
• Never leave babies or pets in a hot car. This seems like common sense, but it’s surprising how often this happens.
• Drink plenty of water every day so that you don’t become dehydrated.
• When working in extreme heat, make sure to take breaks and do not overheat.
• Protect your skin by applying sunscreen throughout the day.
Have a great summer!
