If there is one thing that our nation needs right now, it’s unity.
All it takes is to peruse social media to know that our country is probably the most polarized it’s been in our history. Lines are being drawn every day. People are looking for reasons why they disagree with someone else
.
Social media platforms such as Facebook even encourage you to like or love posts or even react angry. It just seems like there’s no common ground anymore. And that idea has trickled down to every side of life, especially when it comes to politics.
However, the church at times has shown what our world could be like if we came together in one mind and one accord. It happened on the day of Pentecost in the Upper Room, and it has happened at times during our country’s history.
Tomorrow is the 67th annual National Day of Prayer, and this year’s theme is Unity. How timely of a theme is this? While we may not agree on everything in life, we can agree that we need to pray for our country.
Prayer is one of the central activities of the Christian life. It is one of the primary things that Jesus taught his disciples to do, and the Lord’s Prayer is one of the most basic things that every child is taught in church. Sometimes, we recite the prayer, but we don’t even realize the impact of that prayer or the impact of anytime we stop and pray about an issue.
Many times when we pray, we may not feel that we’re making a difference. Perhaps, we think that our prayers hit the ceiling and never make it to God, but that’s far from the truth.
I don’t know how God does it, but the Lord hears our prayers, each and every one. Sometimes, the answer doesn’t come right away. Sometimes, the answer might be no, but God hears it.
So when we take time to pray for unity this Thursday, know that God will hear that prayer. May God change our hearts so that we can once again set aside our petty differences and become a unified country, one nation under God.
