High school baseball and softball playoffs are under way and the area is well represented this year. In baseball, Newton County moved to the second round with a Game 3 win over North Pontotoc in Round 1 of the 4A playoffs. In Class 2A, Lake swept West Lincoln and will face the Richton Rebels in Round 2. Sebastopol has a Game 3 matchup against Water Valley on Tuesday to decide who moves on to the second round. Newton Academy Generals begin their playoff march this week against Porter’s Chapel.
In softball, the Lady Cougars swept Senatobia in the first round and will face Itawamba in Round 2 of Class 4A playoffs. In Class 2A softball, Union Lady Jackets swept Water Valley and will matchup against the Hatley Tigers in Round 2 later this week. The Lady Bobcats move on to the next round against the East Union Urchins after defeating Ingomar in the first two games of their series.
Additionally, Newton Academy Girls tennis team won South State and will be headed to the state tournament next week. Our local track teams performed well at super regionals and will be representing the area in South State meets coming up. City league baseball and softball is in full swing throughout the county and drawing large crowds throughout the week. If you like sports, there is plenty of opportunity to catch an event in the area and show your support. Best of luck to all the local athletes and coaches as their seasons progress.
