Newton Aldermen are planning to move quickly with their search for a new city attorney to replace Robert Logan, who announced he would be leaving his position at the end of December.
In a Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday, Mayor Murray Weems told the board several attorneys practicing in the area had expressed interest in the position and asked to be considered.
Weems suggested the board meet with candidates during the first meeting in September, scheduled for Sept. 4. At the second meeting of the month, Sept. 18, the board could make a decision.
He said selecting a candidate ahead of time would give both the attorney and city more time to prepare for the change.
“That would give them September, October, November and December to get ready to move into the position,” he said.
