Newton Municipal School Board Trustees will hear from candidates to replace Robert Logan, as Board Attorney in their December meeting to allow each candidate to have a fair chance at the position. Logan, who had served as the board attorney for over 10 years, resigned as he was elected Chancery Court Judge in the Nov. 6 election.
Initially, the board was not planning to advertise the position, as Logan had recommended Brian Mayo, who is a partner at his law firm. Mayo had previously assumed Logan’s duties as attorney for the City of Newton prior to the Nov. 6 election. However, in a regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, Superintendent Nola Bryant informed Trustees they had several interested parties.
“Dr. Bryant has a proposal from another firm,” said Levera Chapman, president of the board.
While the school board is not required to advertise for the position, Chapman said it would be good to hear presentations from all interested firms to ensure the selection process is fair. Under normal circumstances, the board would need to make a decision by Jan. 1, but Mayo, being with the same firm as Logan, is able to fill in on an interim basis if the board needs more time.
“Applications will need to be received by Dr. Bryant by Dec. 5 to be added to the agenda before our December meeting,” Chapman said. “All interested parties will have a chance to present in December.”
