J. Douglas Smith will be the new board attorney for the Union Public School District.
He was unanimously approved by board members during a regular meeting on Sept. 10. The only other person who submitted a proposal was Brian Mayo of the Logan & Mayo law firm in Newton.
While Smith’s retainer and hourly fee ($300 per month retainer and $200 per hour fee) was more than Mayo’s ($200 per month retainer and $150 per hour fee), the board members didn’t want to change its meeting time. Currently, Mayo serves as the board attorney for the Newton Municipal School District, who also meets on the second Tuesday like Union. Mayo asked that the meeting time be changed if he was selected, but the board went with Smith instead.
In other business, the board:
• Approved allowing the UHS band to build a small shed under the visitor’s bleachers in the football stadium for storage.
• Approved minor changes to the scholars program.
• Approved Coach Wilbanks as the new cross country coach.
• Allowed $5,500 to be transferred to the band.
• Approved FY18 transfers and the consent agenda.
