Newton County jail is holding a Lauderdale County suspect charged with grand larceny and gun trafficking.
Caitlin Roe, 30, of Sumter, South Carolina was arrested May 24 by Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department after deputies responded to a call at the Astro Motel on Frontage Road in Meridian.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said Roe is suspected of repeatedly stealing guns and valuables and pawning them since late last year. She is charged with grand larceny, gun trafficking, two counts receiving stolen property and 11 counts of possessing a stolen firearm.
Roe is a former employee of Lauderdale County, Calhoun said, which is why she is being held in Newton County instead of the Lauderdale County jail.
“She’s a former employee,” he said. “When that happens, we don’t house them here.”
Calhoun said Newton County and Lauderdale County sheriff’s offices have an arrangement that allows for prisoner swaps when need. A Newton County inmate is being housed in Lauderdale County jail in exchange for holding Roe.
LCSD also arrested Poncy Davis of Meridian, who is charged with burglary and receiving stolen property.
Calhoun said Roe and Davis knew each other but declined to give specifics.
“They’re friends,” Calhoun said. “Let’s leave it at that.”
Davis is being housed in Lauderdale County jail.
