Newton County Sheriff’s Department is investigation a shooting that sent one man to the hospital.
Sheriff Joedy Pennington said deputies responded to a shooting call on Roy Mann Road, east of Newton, around 4:30 p.m. May 5.
“We received a call of someone being shot, and he was in the woods on Roy Mann Road,” he said. “Deputies arrived on scene and found him.”
Pennington said the victim, who was identified as Julian Riddle, suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. Riddle was taken by ambulance to Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian and later released.
Currently deputies are unclear what caused the shooting. Riddle told investigators he was dropping off a friend at a nearby home when an unknown suspect came out of the home and started shooting.
“He drove up to a house to drop somebody off. Someone came out that he’d never seen before and started shooting,” Pennington said. “He took off running and was hit in the shoulder.”
Pennington said the Sheriff’s Department does have a person of interest in the case; however, no arrests have been made. He is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 601-635-4401.
“If anyone knows anything that happened out there on Roy Mann Road, if they saw anything, if they heard anything, please call and let us know,” he said.
Chief Investigator Freddy Gentry is in charge of the investigation.
