An argument between a husband, wife and her boyfriend resulted in a single gunshot being fired in the parking lot of Newton’s Wal-Mart on Sunday afternoon.
Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry said the incident started when a man was dropping his child off with his wife and her boyfriend in the Wal-Mart parking lot around 2 p.m. Sunday. However, the incident escalated when an argument ensued between the adults.
“That’s when the boyfriend came at the husband with a baseball bat,” Curry said. “The husband then discharged his gun into the air to keep the boyfriend from hitting him with the bat. That’s all that happened. It was a single gunshot into the air. There was no shooting, and no one was injured by the gunshot.”
Curry said the husband was charged with discharging a firearm while the boyfriend was charged with simple assault.
“It was a very unfortunate situation,” Curry said. “This could have been avoided.”
