East Central Community College Trustees are working with Union Public School District to create after-school opportunities for local children through a grant program aimed at building 21st century community learning centers.
In the monthly Board of Trustees meeting last Tuesday, Vice President for Instruction Teresa Mackey asked the board to approve a letter of support for UPSD as the district applies for grant funding.
“It’s to create community learning centers for after school hours,” she said. “They asked us to be a partner.”
Currently, Mackey said, Union is still in the process of applying for the grant, but she wanted the board to know East Central had sent a letter of support, effectively signing on to be a partner on the application and future project. If approved, the grant would allow for the creation of a learning center where students could go after school to do homework and study.
Mackey said UPSD had previously applied for the grant last year but did not receive it. This year, she said, the district is hoping ECCC’s involvement will up their chances of being approved.
In other business, the Board of Trustees:
Approved a list of 30 locations where Spring and Fall courses will be taught;
Approved a bid for $88,000 from REI in Little Rock to furnish a new scoreboard with message center and play clocks at Bailey Stadium; and
Approved demolishing two single-family structures at 148 and 150 N. 6th Ave. to make way for the new Band Hall construction.
