Resident of Woodlawn Circle could be seeing paving trucks on their street as soon as Friday.
In a special called meeting of the Decatur Board of Aldermen Wednesday, Mayor David Marshall explained crews with Custom Paving were already in the area for another project, and the town had an opportunity to pave Woodlawn Circle if aldermen acted quickly.
“$15,000 was approved in April,” he said. “$15,000 was approved to fix three patches that we’ve got out here in the streets. They’re going to be able to do that for about $4,500.”
With the repair work coming in well under budget, Marshall said he asked Custom Paving if they’d be willing to take on another project with the remaining $10,500. After reviewing the scope of the project, Custom Paving provided two quotes. A layer of asphalt 11/2 inches thick would run $21,980, and 2 inches would cost $28,880.
“He recommended two inch,” Marshall said. “We’ve got tree roots over there. Once the trees start spreading, the roots crack your asphalt, moisture gets up in there, it’s going to break.”
Taking out the $10,500 left over from the repair project, Marshall said the project would cost $18,380. He asked the board to approve up to $25,000 for the project, leaving some wiggle room in the budget if the project runs into a snag.
“I’m not expecting that. $18,380 is what I’m expecting, and that’s using that additional money we had set aside on the first project to subsidize the second project,” he said.
The board agreed Woodlawn Circle needed to be repaved and that 2-inches would be needed to do it right.
Aldermen Max Anderson said the road sees frequent traffic from garbage trucks and school buses, heavy vehicles that put a lot of strain on the road.
“It needs to be 2 inches if those trucks are running on it,” he said.
Additionally, Anderson said, doing the project now, while Custom Paving is already in the area, saves the taxpayers a lot of money on the project.
“Just the relocation costs an arm and a leg,” he said.
With the funds approved, Marshall said Custom Paving would move on to Woodlawn Circle after finishing their other projects in the area. From the timeline given by the company, he said that could be as soon as Friday.
