This past week, Newton County lost a titan in the coaching community when Steve Harber passed away after a year-long battle with cancer.

Harber amassed more than 1,000 wins over a 50-year career that included stops at Decatur, Union, Forest, Newton County, Lamar School and finally at Newton County Academy.

Basketball: Lady Bobcats Defeat Lake 47-43

Earlier this season, the Lake Lady Hornets beat Sebastopol 57-11 on Nov. 13.

But the second time was different.

The Lady Bobcats bounced back from that early loss and took a 47-43 win over the Lady Hornets.

Sebastopol coach Cade Gibson said his team has come a long way in a short amount of time.

Basketball: Jackets Defeat Enterprise 59-53

The Union basketball teams each picked up a win last week in three contests.

The Union boys beat Enterprise 59-53 while dropping contests to Scott Central 35-30 and Clarkdale 52-39.

The Union girls picked up a 42-20 win over Clarkdale while falling 39-30 to Enterprise and 56-21 to Scott Central.

Basketball: Lady Generals Win 2 of 3, Boys Split

The Newton County Academy Lady Generals won two out of three games last week.

The Lady Generals hammered Discovery Christian 50-14 on Tuesday and then beat Prentiss 40-36 on Thursday. They finished the week with a 43-36 loss to Laurel Christian.
