Newton County High School threw open its doors for Open House Thursday to allow parents and family members a chance to meet with their child’s teacher and see what NCHS has to offer.
“We have exciting things going on all the time,” said Dawn Hollingsworth, assistant principal at NCHS.
Hollingsworth said the school began holding an Open House several years ago as a way to bridge the gap between a student’s home life and school life
“We’ve been doing this for awhile now,” she said. “It’s just an opportunity for us to connect with parents and for them to connect with us on a personal level.”
When parents and teachers can build a personal relationship, Hollingsworth said, the students benefit. Whether it’s an issue understanding the subject material, a discipline issue or a behavioral problem that is affecting a student’s academics, when parents and teachers are on the same page, identifying and correcting those issues is a lot easier.
“Being an educator, when you make contact with a parent, it can be a game changer for a kid, who’s maybe just having a little problem within classroom settings or a big problem within a classroom setting,” she said. “It can definitely be a game changer.”
During Thursday’s Open House, Hollingsworth said, parents could go to their student’s home room class, talk with the teacher and pick up their child’s report card for the first 9-week term. Of course, she said, not all parents are able to attend Open House, so the remaining report cards were sent home with students Friday.
Additionally, Hollingsworth said, NCHS will be holding another Open House later in the academic year. For those parents who were not able to attend Thursday, she said they will have another chance after the third 9-week term.
