Newton County parents and children are invited to a free Back-To-School supply give away Saturday at the Newton County Coliseum.
The event, which is sponsored by the Southern Foundation and Newton County Board of Supervisors, will feature bounce houses, games, vendor booths and food, as well as backpacks stuffed with school supplies for students, 18 and under, to use next year.
Karen Harris, who is organizing the event, said she wanted to feature something for every member of the family, while helping students get ready for the coming school year. For the children, and youthful adults, that means carnival games, activities and lots of food.
“Lunch will be provided for the children,” she said.
For the adults, Harris said, the Back-To-School event will have political speakers, vendor booths from local businesses and a voter registration booth.
Southern Foundation is supplying the backpacks and the meal for the children, Harris said, but the organization can’t provide meals for the adults. However, she said she is looking for donations to feed the parents as well.
Additionally, Harris said, all businesses, organizations and political speakers are invited to participate in the event.
“We are asking the public, if they want to come set up booths, they can,” she said.
Saturday’s event will run 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the show barn at the Newton County Coliseum. The event is free and open to everyone who wants to come out, have fun and wish local students well before they head back to the classrooms August 6.
Harris said all are welcome, and there is no need to register, RSVP or sign up to attend. Anyone wishing to set up a booth or make a donation can reach her at 601-513-8709.
