Newton County School District may see a little extra money come its way after the Town of Decatur let the district know a company was interested in buying the communication towers erected on school grounds.
In a Board of Trustees meeting Monday, Superintendent J.O. Amis said the district’s internet provider, which is contracted through the Town of Decatur, contacted him to tell him about the potential sale.
“They’re saying that someone is wanting to buy these towers that are sitting on the grounds,” he said. “Apparently, even though they own the towers, they have to have permission from the school.”
Amis said he was just beginning to contact the interested buyer but was hopeful either selling or leasing space on the towers could bring additional revenue for the district.
In other business, the Board of Trustees heard from a concerned parent, who thought a bus driver might be unfairly targeting her son after he was suspended Sept. 25.
Board President Jason Cain said the district would investigate the situation further to make sure the way it was handled was fair to everyone.
“We want to make sure all children are treated equally,” he said. “Mr. Amis will look into it and get back to you.”
The Board of Trustees also:
Approved terminating the district’s pest control contract after reaching a mutual agreement with the pest control provider;
Approved advertising for bids for pest control; and
Approved moving the November Board of Trustees meeting date to Nov. 5 due to a scheduling conflict with the Mississippi School Board Association conference.
