Union is a small, rural, Southern town with residents of all ages and with all different kinds of jobs. Many residents are retired, others work in Union or the surrounding areas, and many students attend school. Union residents enjoy special qualities not found anywhere else—a safe community, good neighbors and a rural atmosphere. Despite all of these good qualities about Union, there are some drawbacks. There is not a wide range of jobs in our town, and although our town is mostly quiet, I find difficulty in writing articles for the next week due to a lack of information.
When I started writing for the paper, I had several different ideas I could write about. I wrote about our local history, our school and a few local traditions. I still write about these when the opportunities present themselves; however, I have begun to have tremendous difficulty finding things to write about. This is caused by simply a lack of information. Although Union residents enjoy the quietness of a small, country town (which is definitely a good thing in the fast-paced world of 2019), this presents a tremendous lack of material for me to write a local news column. However, this is not without a solution.
When I was reading through editions of The Neshoba Democrat from 1917, I came across a section titled “Local News,” which detailed the happenings of everyday citizens in Neshoba County. I would like to take a similar approach, but I still need some way to obtain information; therefore, I have decided to follow Mrs. Ruth Mills’ approach to columnist writing. Union residents would email Mrs. Ruth information throughout the week of local happenings, which she would then write articles on this for the paper. By following this approach, I can write better quality articles that reflects the local community as well as having a study flow of information.
Union is a place for a special group of people; Union is a place for people who prefer a more laid-back, country lifestyle that is becoming less prevalent across the United States. We have many things and people in Union to be proud of because they have accomplished so much. I want to write better articles about this wonderful community, but I need information. Therefore, I will continue the old Southern tradition of writing about local happenings in the county newspaper. If anyone has any information that about local happenings, please email it to me at mch.2000@hotmail.com. I look forward to writing these articles for our town.
