Even though things have life seems to have some semblance of normalcy, people still seem to exhibit a phenomenon I like to call Coronavirus Crazy. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused reasonable fears (even in Union), and everyone has a right to fear the effects of COVID-19; this terrible virus has infected many people and killed many as well. There is also no known treatment for this disease. However, COVID-19 is not the only disease to cause such problems and exhibiting an almost irrational fear of this disease will not help in keeping the community calm.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many diseases infected people in the town of Union, the state of Mississippi, and the United States as a whole. With these diseases, people did not constantly fear infection to the point where they were afraid to go out. Many of these diseases were just as severe or more severe than COVID-19. Furthermore, instead of canceling practices or church services or anything else because someone might be infected (even though said person does not exhibit any symptoms) is unreasonable and irrational. Common sense dictates that if someone does get sick (whether with COVID-19 or anything else), he or she should stay home. Furthermore, washing hands is the best way to combat the infection, and everyone should be doing this regardless of a pandemic. A little common sense will go a long way toward promoting a calm community.
In keeping with the theme of common sense and a calm community, people who are not at an increased risk of the disease and do not live with those who are at increased risk should not fear living their lives as normal. Even though those at risk should take all necessary precautions, this is still no reason to fear because these people were likely at risk of several other diseases before the pandemic began. These such precautions are not entirely new to them. Furthermore, everyone should continue to follow all state and federal guidelines in order to manage the spread of the virus. Although this seems contradictory, this does not mean for people to significantly alter their lives or live in fear. This is simply an extension of a common-sense approach.
Instead of living in fear of COVID-19 and overreacting, Union should take a common-sense approach to continue the fight against this pandemic and combat the phenomenon known as Coronavirus Crazy. As a community, Union should not live in fear of COVID-19. Many other viruses have threatened the world before, and every time, people always beat the virus. This time will be no different. Eventually, COVID-19 will become a disease that everyone deals with, and no one will live in fear anymore. While we cannot control the virus, we can control our own reactions and emotions. We must remember to use common sense and not go Coronavirus Crazy.
