Dot Hollingsworth enjoyed a few days visit from her sister, Sue Fountain, from Natchez last week, in celebration of Dot’s 88th birthday on July 5.
They had lunch at Main Street Deli in Philadelphia and found the food to be very good. The location was formerly Stubbs Department Store, where Dot and her family shopped frequently in years past. It brought bac
k memories of clerks and good service rendered.
Redeemer Baptist Church had vacation Bible school last week. The stage and backdrops were still up for worship service this (Sunday) morning.
It reminded me of years past, when I attended VBS in Louisiana. It must have left a lasting impression on me, because in my (younger) adult years, I participated in the teaching of them, even one year using a full week – half of my total year’s vacation – to teach. Sometimes children will attend vacation Bible school who never get to go to church any other time. Many children take Christ as their Savior during the week of Bible school. I always enjoyed it back in the day.
I believe most of the churches of all denominations have a vacation Bible school, and I commend them for continuing it year after year, often not knowing what kind of a turn-out they will have. There is a lot of volunteer work that goes into it, from the preparing of food to be brought to the church, the teaching of lessons and new music to learn and the craft times. Clean up when the classes, meals and crafts are finished is no picnic either, especially when you are already tired from working a day job.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend those who teach these classes, as well as Sunday School and other church-related classes. These volunteers are pretty much “unsung heroes” in my opinion. The Neshoba County Fair, Mississippi’s Giant House Party, begins this week, July 21 and runs through July 28. William Michael Moore, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Frank Foster and the Brothers Osborne will headline the entertainment. There will also be a car show, an arts and crafts flea market and many other activities, besides visiting and eating. The admission is $40 for a season pass $15 for a day ticket. Children nine years old and under are admitted free of charge.
I am happy to report that I am getting a few items of interest from readers during the last month. I would love to hear from more of you.
