The fast-pitch softball season got started this past week with a handful of games.
Here’s a roundup of the action:
Newton County
The Lady Cougars started the season with a pair of tight wins last week, beating Lewisburg 4-3 on Friday and Sebastopol 5-2 on Saturday.
In the season opener on Friday, County scored four runs in the fifth inning on a grand slam by Lexi Addy. County had five hits in the contest as Mary Preston Williams, Kolbie Wansley, Addison Massey and Adilyn Vaughn also singled for County. Addy also pitched all seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks to get the win.
On Saturday, against Sebastopol, County got a three-run double from Vaughn in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 win. County had nine hits as Williams was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Gracey Wood was also 2-for-3 for County. Landry Brunson pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out 10.
County will play at Clarkdale on Tuesday and at Enterprise on Thursday. They will play at Lake on Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.
Union
The Lady Yellowjackets split a pair of games to start the season, beating Lake 11-7 but falling 5-1 to Clinton on Saturday.
Union trailed early before scoring seven runs in the seventh to take the win Union had 13 hits in the contest, led by Ava Claire Smith who went 3-for-3. Raleigh Dickerson, Destiny Moulds an Aubrie Coleman each had two hits. Maggie Atkinson had a double and three RBIs while Moulds had a triple. Abigail Cleveland started and pitched four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. Dickerson pitched he last three innings to pick up the win.
In the second game of the day on Saturday, Union managed just five hits and one run in a loss to Clinton. Dickerson doubled for Union. Coleman pitched all seven innings for Union, giving up five runs on six hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.
Union is scheduled to play at Neshoba on Tuesday and then host the Lady Rockets on Thursday. They will finish the week on Saturday by hosting Caledonia.
Lake
The Lady Hornets split a pair of games to open the regular season, beating Nanih Waiya 4-1 on Tuesday and losing 11-7 to Union on Saturday.
On Tuesday against Nanih Waiya, the Lady Hornets banged outline hits and used a three-run sixth to take the win. Lydaysha Thames and Emma Posey were each 2-for-3 with a double while Kinsley Woods also tripled. Jacey Wells pitched all seven innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and two walks while striking out 13.
On Saturday, Union scored seven runs in the seventh to take the win. Lake had 13 hits, led by Woods who was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Amaure’i Jones was 3-for-5 while Alyssa Woods was 2-for-4. Ceely Graham and Thames also doubled for Lake. Wells pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts while Graham pitched the last 3 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs on nine hits.
Sebastopol
The Lady Bobcats lost their only game to Newton County, falling 5-2 on Saturday.
Sebastopol scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Peyton Chamblee and Campbell Hollingsworth before County broke open a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth. Savannah Crout pitched all six innings and took the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five.
Sebastopol is scheduled to play at Lake on Thursday and at Hernando on Saturday.
