The Newton County Cougars only won one of four games last week, losing both games in Division 5-4A play.
The Cougars were swept by Northeast Jones, falling 14-0 and 14-0 to the Tigers. The Cougars split a doubleheader with Enterprise, winning 8-7 in eight innings but lost the nightcap 6-1.
Newton County, now 6-12, returns to play this week as they play a two-game series with Mendenhall. They will host the Tigers on Tuesday and travel to Mendenhall on Thursday. The Cougars will play at Kosciusko on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
County 8, Enterprise 7
The Cougars scored one run in the top of the eighth and held on to take a one-run win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Enterprise scored one in the first and second before County scored three in the this and four in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. But Enterprise scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game into overtime. Newton County scored in the top of the eighth as Rod Evans singled in Tucker Fitch, who reached base when he was hit by a pitch and stole second.
Newton County had 11 hits, led by Rod Evans who was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Tyson Wood was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Tucker Fitch was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Cole Shimfessel doubled and drove in a run. Fitch stole four bases whole Evans and Connor Boggan each had two stolen bases.
Wood started on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on four hits and four walks. Sam Shaw faced three batters and gave up one run on two hits and a walk. Tyler Cavenaugh got the final 2 2/3 innings and picked up the win as he gave up one run on two hits.
Enterprise 6, County 1
The Cougars struggled at the plate again as they dropped a five-run decision to the Bulldogs on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader.
Enterprise scored one in the first, second and fourth and finished off with three in the sixth. County scored its only run in the sixth.
County had five hits as David Burton had a double and drove in a run. Tyson Wood singled and also scored. Wilson Jackson, Gage Hollingsworth and Griffin Bailey also singled.
Gatlin Huber started on the mound and pitched five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Tyler Cavenaugh pitched one inning and gave up one run on three hits while striking out two.
NE Jones 14, County 0
The Tigers used a nine-run third inning and took a run-rule win over the Cougars on Tuesday.
Northeast scored two in the first and second, nine in the third and one in the fourth.
Newton County only had one hit and committed four errors. Cole Shimfessel had County’s only hit.
On the mound Gatlin Huber started and pitched one inning, giving up four runs on two hits while David Burton pitched 1 1/3 innings. Burton gave up seven runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two. Tyler Cavenaugh pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
NE Jones 15, County 0
The Cougars struggled at the plate again as the Tigers took a second run-rule win over the Cougars on Friday.
Northeast scored two in the first and second, six in the third and five in the fourth.
County had two hits and committed eight errors. Tucker Fitch and Rod Evans each had singles while Tyler Cavenaugh drew two walks.
Jacob Hitt started on the mound and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs, only four earned, on six hits and four walks whiles striking out three. David Burton pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and gave up six runs, only one earned, on three hits while striking out five.
