The Newton County Cougars ended their baseball season this week as they were swept in a two-game series with 4A contender Florence.
The Cougars managed just one hit in the series, falling 13-0 on Saturday and 10-0 on Monday.
The Cougars finished the season with a 10-16 record.
Florence 10, County 0
The Cougars were eliminated from the playoffs as they were no-hit on Monday in Game 2 of the series.
Florence scored four runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Florence had 12 hits in the game while Newton County drew just three walks. Rod Evans had two walks and Joshua Mott walked once.
David Burton started and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on four hits and six walks while Tyler Cavanaugh pitched the last three innings and gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three.
Florence 13, County 0
After three scoreless innings, Florence pulled away to take a six-inning, run-rule win in Game 1 of the series on Saturday.
Florence scored one in the fourth, followed by seven in the fifth and six in the sixth.
Florence outhit County 11-1 in the contest. Tyson Wood had County’s only hit in the contest.
Jacob Hitt started on the mound for Newton County and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on seven hits and four walks. Gatlin Huber pitched the last 2/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits.
County 18, Enterprise 17
The Cougars scored 12 runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a walk-off win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
County led 4-1 after two inning and Enterprise scored three in the third to tie the score at 4-4. After each team scored one in the fourth, Enterprise started to pull away with four in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in seventh to take a 17-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
The Cougars had five hits and drew walks in the seventh including the game winner as Tyson Wood drew a bases-loaded walk to score Griffin Bailey.
David Burton was 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and five RBIs in the contest while Tyler Cavanaugh was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Tyson Wood was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs and three walks. Conner Boggan was hit by a pitch twice, scored three runs and had two RBIs while Gage Hollingsworth had two walks and two runs scored. Cole Shimfessel also singled and had two RBIs.
Jacob Hitt, Gatlin Huber, Tyson Wood, Cavanaugh, Justin Davis and Sam Shaw all pitched for Newton County.
