The Newton County Lady Cougars won two out of three contests last week but also suffered their second loss of the season.
The Lady Cougars threw a perfect game against Union on Thursday at Enterprise and were leading Perry Central 10-0 in the first when it started to rain. On Friday, Newton County dropped its second game of the season in a 4-0 loss to Northwest Rankin and then followed that with a 13-4 win over Sebastopol.
Newton County (8-2) came back from spring break and hit the meat of their schedule. On Monday, the Lady Cougars traveled to Choctaw Central and will host the Lady Warriors on Thursday. On Saturday, Newton County will travel to the South Jones Tournament where they will take on Oak Grove at 3 p.m. and George County t 7 p.m.
County 13, Sebastopol 4
The Lady Cougars broke out of their day-long hitting slump to beat the Lady Bobcats in their second game of the day on Friday.
Each team scored one run in the first and Sebastopol scored three in the third and led 4-1 after four innings. But Newton County scored 11 runs in the fifth and added one in the sixth for the final margin.
Newton County had 10 hits and 13 walks on the day with four multiple hitters. Katelyn Gipson was 2-for-2 with two doubles, walks two runs scored and drove in two runs. Lorren Ivey was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Lizzy Hollingsworth and Landree Amis were each 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Amis had a double. Lanie Phillips, Casey Dube and Shelby Anderson each had a double while Anderson also had two RBIs. Karlye Tolbird had a single and drove in three runs.
Shelby Anderson got the start and gave up one hit in 4 1/3 innings while striking out eight. Ivey pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, only one earned, on five hits and two strikeouts.
NW Rankin 4, County 0
The Lady Cougars struggled at the plate with only one hit as they suffered their second loss of the season on Friday to the Lady Cougars.
Northwest scored two in the first with one in the fourth and seventh.
Lorren Ivey had County’s only hit while Lanie Phillips also had two walks.
Brittany Thomas pitched five innings and gave up three runs on five hits and three walks. Shelby Anderson pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits and two strikes.
County 10, Union 0
The Lady Cougars got a perfect game from pitcher Shelby Anderson in a shutout win over Union on Thursday.
Newton County scored eight runs in the first inning and added two in the fifth.
County had 11 hits in the contest, led by Lanie Phillips who was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-2 with two doubles while Landree Amis was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Shelby Anderson was 2-for-4 while Katelyn Gipson had a double and drove in two runs. Brittany Thomas also doubled and scored a run.
Shelby Anderson pitched five innings and struck out 10 without allowing a baserunner.
