Newton County Academy split a pair of games with Central Hinds last week in their only action of the week.
The Generals opened up with an 8-5 win over the Cougars and then dropped the nightcap 12-9.
NCA, now 2-5, will return to action this week as they will play Southeast Lauderdale in the Stringer Tournament on Monday. They will return to Stringer and play Simpson Academy on Tuesday in a 1:30 p.m. contest. The Generals will end the week as they go to Kemper Academy on Thursday.
NCA 8, Central Hinds 5
The Generals scored six runs in the first inning and held on to take a three-run win over the Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
After leading 6-1 after the first, NCA added single runs in the fourth and sixth. Central Hinds added two in the sixth and seventh to make it close.
NCA had eight hits in the contest, led by Austin Upton who was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Alec Thompson was 2-for-4 and scored a run while Braxton Thoms waked twice and scored twice. Harber Reese also walked twice and scored twice while Lincoln Jordan singled and drove in two runs.
Thompson started on the mound and picked up the win, going five innings as he allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four. Hayden Wall pitched 1/3 of an inning and walked three and gave up two runs. Hays West pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out three.
Central Hinds 12, NCA 9
The Generals overcame an early 9-0 deficit but the Cougars rallied and scored three runs late to take the win to split the doubleheader.
Central Hinds scored nine in the first inning before NCA scored two in the third and seven in the fourth to tie the game. Central Hinds then scored three in the sixth and held in the seventh to take the win.
NCA had just five hits but had seven walks and had six reach on errors. Kemp Alderman got going at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam and two runs scored. Lincoln Jordan was 2-for-4 while Austin Upton drove in two runs. Braxton Thoms scored twice while Hayden Wall walked twice.
Harber Reese got the start and got just one out as he faced 10 batters, giving up nine runs with only three earned on four hits and a walk. Wesley Williams pitched the next 3 2/3 innings as he scattered three hits without giving up a run. Hayden West pitched the next 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out three. Kemp Alderman pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run on one hit.
