Union’s Garrett Posey didn’t need much of an athletic scholarship but found the one he was looking for.
The Union senior signed to play football at Mississippi College on Tuesday after a stellar senior season for the Yellowjackets where he helped guide the team to an 8-5 record and a win in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Posey was all smiles as he inked his name on his national letter of intent form on Wednesday.
“I’m pretty excited about it,” Posey said. “It’s a blessed opportunity. I had some small schools offers but I wasn’t really interested in them. I have always known that I wanted to go to Mississippi College.”
Posey is a member of Union High School’s 30-plus ACT school after posting a 3x on the college entrance exam.
“It’s another blessing from God,” Posey said of his ACT score. “God gave me the ability to multi-task and to manage my time really well. I’m pretty good about getting things done when they have to get done.”
On the field, Posey stands and 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds and matured into a solid player for Breland and the Yellowjackets.
“He has physically matured a lot in the last couple of years,” Breland said. “He has gone from 190 pounds in the ninth grade to 250-260 pounds as a senior. And he has grown into somebody who has stepped up and taken the bull by the horns and was a great leader for us.
“I’m excited for him but am sad see to see him go because he has been a major part of our program for four years. I’m excited to see him advance and get a chance to get a great education.”
