The Union Yellowjackets dropped a 27-15 decision to Class 4A Northeast Lauderdale at East Central on Friday.
But veteran coach Brad Breland saw plenty of positives, even in the loss.
“We moved the ball and our quarterback did a good job of making some plays when we didn’t block well,” Breland said. “We are going to be better. We saw some good things. We are going to be more physical, I can promise you that. Overall, nobody got hurt and that’s the main thing. And I thought we competed. We made a couple of goal-line stands. I hate to lose but I thought we competed well against a 4A school. We got what we wanted.”
Ferguson had a good game with a touchdown pass and several big runs that sparked the offense.
“Colby is our best football player,” Breland said. “He’s our best runner, he’s our best tackler, he’s our best leader and did a good job tonight. He did a good job on the sideline tonight and that means a lot for us right now where we are at. He is doing really good right now. We do need to get into better shape, that’s for sure.”
Three of Northeast’s touchdowns came from Kam Hulin, a Division I prospect who is considered one of the fastest players in the state.
The Yellowjackets will take on Choctaw Central in week one. The Warriors also played in the East Central jamboree and took a 14-6 win over Sebastopol.
“Choctaw looked really big and they moved the ball against Sebastopol,” Breland said. “I was pretty impressed with them. They were really big up front and that scares me to. They did a good job of running the football.”
