The Union Yellowjackets won the two games they had to win last week.
Union swept a pair of games from Scott Central, hammering the Rebels 13-2 and 21-2. Then on Saturday, Union dropped a pair of games, falling 11-0 to Nanih Waiya and 14-3 to Leake Central.
“We had two good district wins so that’s a good start toward our goal of a district championship,” Union coach Dustin Hamrick said. “We’re stinking it up on Saturday’s though, which is very disappointing. Our defense has to play a lot better if we’re going to do anything this year.”
Union returned to action this week with a pair of games against Newton, hosting the Tigers on Tuesday and will play at Newton on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Union 13, Scott Central 2
Union scored nine runs in the second inning and cruised to a five-inning, run-rule victory on Tuesday.
After Scott Central scored one in the first, Union answered with nine in the second and three in the fourth.
Union had 10 hits in the contest as J.T. Vance was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jaylon Buckley was 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Cameron Scones had a bases-clearing double. Lane Hanna and Rope Lovern each had singles, one RBI and scored twice while Trevor Patchin, Jacob Moore and Casey Morris each had singles and scored runs.
Casey Morris picked up the win on the mound as he pitched four innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out nine. Judd Young pitched the final inning and struck out two.
Union 21, Scott Central 2
Union took advantage of 11 errors by Scott Central to take a five-inning, run-rule victory on Friday.
After a scoreless first, Union scored five in the second, three in the third, six in the fourth and seven in the fifth to win by the run rule.
Union had 12 hits in the contest as Jacob Moore led the way by going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Jaylon Buckley was 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Trevor Patchin was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Rope Lovern, Austin Tate and Cameron Sones each had two RBIs while Michael McDonald scored three runs.
Lane Hanna pitched all five innings for the Yellowjackets and gave up two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out 12.
Nanih Waiya 11, Union 0
The Warriors had little trouble taking a five-inning, run-rule victory on Saturday.
Nanih Waiya scored four in the second and fourth and three in the third on nine hits.
Union only had one hit, a single by Casey Morris.
Jaylon Buckley pitched three innings and gave up seven runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two. Trevor Patchin pitched two innings as he gave up four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
Leake Central 14, Union 3
Leake Central scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to take a five-inning, run-rule victory on Saturday.
Union led 1-0 after two innings before Leake scored four in the third. Leake then scored 10 in the fifth and Union added two more in the bottom of the fifth.
Union had four hits and committed six errors in the contest.
Kolton Cockerham had a triple that drove in a run and he also scored. Casey Morris had a double and drove in a run while J.T. Vance singled and scored. Trevor Patchin had a single and scored.
Austin Tate got the start and pitched four innings as he gave up nine runs, six unearned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out three. Cameron Sones pitched the final inning and gave up five runs on two hits and two walks.
