The Lake Hornets had an exciting week on the baseball diamond as they split a pair of one-run games.
The Hornets opened the week with an 11-10 loss to Puckett on Monday and then rebounded to take an 8-7 win over Choctaw Central on Wednesday to finish out the week.
Lake, now 5-3, was scheduled to host Lake on Monday and begin division play with Newton this week but those games have been postponed. The MHSAA will meet later this month to discuss the future of spring sports.
Puckett 11, Lake 10
The Wolves scored six runs in the top of the seventh to make a one-run win over the Hornets on Monday in the Forest Tournament.
Lake led early as they scored four runs in the second, followed by single runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 6-0. Each team scored two in the fifth inning while Puckett scored three in the top of the sixth. Lake answered with two in the bottom of the sixth to lead 10-5 going to the seventh where Puckett scored six runs to take the win.
Each team had seven hits in the contest but Lake committed eight errors. Easton Tune was 3-or-5 with a home run and three RBIs while Brady McGee was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Kenny Ray Hanna walked twice and scored two runs while Nathan Lott drew three walks. Will Geter had two RBIs while Jalen Gray scored two runs.
McGee started on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out 12. Jacob Lanier pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs, only two earned, on three hits and two walks.
Lake 8, Choctaw Central 7
The Hornets held off a late charge by the Warriors to take a one-run win on Wednesday at Forest.
Choctaw scored three runs in the first and seventh innings with one run in the sixth. Lake scored five in the third and three in the fifth. Lake outhit Choctaw 12-9 in the contest. Will Geter was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Lake while Ben Moore was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Easton Tune doubled and scored two runs while Jacob Lanier also scored twice. Kel Harrison and Kenny Ray Hanna each doubled, scored a run and had an RBI. Jalen Gray also had two stolen bases.
Ben Moore started but faced only one batter while Nathon Lott pitched the next five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Riley Bell pitched the next 1 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits and two walks while Logan Player got the last out for Lake to pick up the save.
