Lake will hit the road this week in a battle of Class 2A contenders as they take on the Pisgah Dragons.
“They are really big up front and physical,” Lake coach Tate Hanna said. “They are going to hit you in the mouth. Sometimes they go eight men on the line. The quarterback carries the ball like 80 percent of the time. He’s a big kid and he runs downhill and they pound you. They throw it very little but are going to run a lot.”
Pisgah comes in with a 3-0 record with wins over Hartfield Academy (34-0), Richland (41-13) and St. Andrew’s (35-14). The Dragons are averaging 460 yards a game on offense with 394 on the ground.
Senior Noah Thweatt has already rushed for 569 yards on six carries and Dillon Usry who has 385 yards on 54 carries. Both have scored six touchdowns apiece.
Last year, Lake took a 24-14 win over the Dragons, who finished 9-4 and lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoff.
Carroll (3-0) at NCA (0-3)
Teams headed in two different directions will meet in Decatur on Friday night.
Carroll rolls into the contest with a 3-0 record and have run roughshod over opponents, beating Benton (38-0), Lee, Ark. (39-12), and Kirk (33-7).
“They are going to be big and physical,” NCA coach Rob Roberts said. “They have a good quarterback who throws pretty good. They have a big tailback and run right at you. We really need to win this week to get some power points for the playoffs. We’ve dug ourselves in a hole and need to dig out of it.”
The Rebels are led by a two-headed monster at tailback as Jeb Beck has 355 yards on 50 carries while Hunter Brackin has 269 yards on 31 carries.
J.Z. George (0-3) at
Union (1-2)
Union will return home this week hoping to snap a two-game losing streak when they host Class 3A J.Z. George.
J.Z. George comes in with an 0-3 record with loss to Okolona (19-14), Noxapater (26-18) and Water Valley (41-6).
“They are big and athletic,” Union coach Brad Breland said. “We will need to play well if we are going to beat them. I’m sure they are hungry for a win. They look really fast. The quarterback runs really well and they have some big defensive linemen. They lock you up man to man and put a lot of pressure on the offense.”
Newton (0-3) at Choctaw Central (0-3)
Two struggling football teams will meet on Friday night on the reservation at Choctaw Central.
Choctaw comes in with an 0-3 record and has losses to Union (43-35), Cherokee, N.C. (27-6) and Choctaw County (64-14).
Newton County (1-2) at Southeast Lauderdale (0-3)
A pair of struggling football teams will meet on Friday night.
Southeast Lauderdale comes in with an 0-3 record with losses to Quitman (34-6), Heidelberg (20-14) and Northeast Lauderdale (49-7).
The Tigers are led by senior running back Malik Miller and junior quarterback Travis Ruttley.
