Homecoming didn’t go as planned for Newton at Morgan Field Friday night.
Magee dominated the Tigers from the opening kickoff and ran away with a 50-7 win on homecoming night.
Newton coach Zack Grady said his shorthanded Tigers didn’t handle the physical play of Magee.
“We really got pushed around up front,” Grady said. “The bye week really comes at a great time because we are beat up right now. We need to get some guys back healthy, and that’s going to be our goal over the next week.”
Magee racked up three touchdowns in the opening stanza runs of 7 and 81 yards and an 8-yard touchdown through the air.
The onslaught continued as Magee returned a bad punt snap 20 yards for a touchdown, followed by another bad snap that sent the punter out of the end zone for a safety.
Magee the returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The special teams breakdowns continued as Magee recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown.
Newton lost 79 yards on five plays related to bad snaps in the game.
Magee then added its final score in the third quarter.
“That touchdown was important to us as a team,” Grady said.
However, Newton didn’t give up, as Tre Hillie rumbled for a 75-yard touchdown. Andre Ware added the extra point.
Hillie finished with 120 yards on 11 carries and threw for 98 yards on 5-for-13 passing.
