The Union powerlifting team capped off another championship season by taking the Class 2A meet on Saturday at the Mississippi Coliseum.
Union used four first-place finishes to beat East Union by 51-38 to take the title for the third straight year.
The Yellowjackets got state championship performances from Bankston Rush in the 114-pound weight class, Cody Rogers in the 148-pound weight class, Raylon Nettles in the 220-pound class and Jacob Moore in the 275-pound class.
Moore had a dominating performance as he beat teammate Micheal Rush by 100 pounds and set the Class 2A record for his weight division.. Moore had a 1,605-pound total, which was the highest of any competitor in Class 2A. Moore had a 675-pound squat, also the best in 2A, a 315-pound bench and a 615-pound deadlift, also the best in all of 2A. Rush wasn’t far behind with a 1,505-pound total with a 625-pound squat, 315-pound bench and a 565-pound dead lift.
Raylon Nettles was easily first in the 220-pound weight class, winning by 190 pounds. Nettles had a 610-pound squat, 265-pound bench and 600-pound deadlift for a total of 1,475 pounds, easily beating Enterprise’s Cainan Black who had a total of 1,285 pounds.
Union also dominated the 148-pound weight class as Cody Rogers beat out teammate Malcolm Clay by 50 pounds to win a repeat state championship and also set a new Class 2A record for the 148-pound class. Rogers had a 480-pound squat, 235-pound bench and 535-pound dead lift while Clay had a 485-pound squat, 260-pound bench and 455-pound dead lift.
Union’s other title came from Bankston Rush, who took a 25-pound win in the 114-pound weight class. Rush had a 315-pound squat, 155-pound bench and a 330-pound deadlift to take the win.
Union also got a second-place finish from Trent McDonald in the 242-pound weight class. McDonald had a total of 1,385 points, falling to East Union’s Eli Hodges who had a 1,450-pound total. McDonald had a 575-pound squat, 250-pound bench and 56-pound dead lift. Alex Sharp was second in the 308-pound weight class, with a total of 1,365 pounds, falling to Calhoun City’s who had a total of 1,470 pounds. Sharp had a 570-pound squat, 295-pound bench and a 500-pound deadlift.
Union’s Zach Collins was fifth in the 242-pound weight class with a total of 1,340 pounds. Gavin Heath was fourth in the 132-pound weight class with a total of 940 pounds.
