In a dramatic turnaround, the Lake Lady Hornets will enter the new year with a winning record.
The Lady Hornets won three games last week, beating Ethel 45-43, Mize 45-34 and Morton 42-34.
The Hornets dropped three games, but all three were by single points as they lost 68-65 to Ethel, 52-50 to Mize and 49-44 to Morton.
Lake will return to action after the Christmas break as they travel to Mize on Jan. 4 and will open Division 4-2A play on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Newton.
Lake girls 45, Ethel 43
The Lady Hornets overcame a fourth-period deficit to take a two-point win over Ethel on Tuesday night.
Lake led 14-11 at the end of the first but the score was tied 22-22 at the half. Ethel outscored Lake 13-10 in the third to go up 35-32 going into the fourth. But the Lady Hornets pulled away in the fourth, outscoring the Lady Tigers 13-8 to take the win.
D’Nara Barton led Lake with 17 points while Laurel Breland had 10 points. Tra’Shaylah Wilson had eight points and Darnesia Jones had seven points.
Ethel boys 68, Lake 65
Ethel jumped out to a big lead in the first but had to fight back to beat the Hornets on Tuesday night.
Ethel jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first and led 37-29 at the half. With the help of some long-range shooting, Lake outscored Ethel 18-9 in the third to take a 47-46 lead at the end of the third. But Ethel outscored Lake 22-18 in the fourth to take the three-point win.
Tahi Lay led Lake with 17 points while Brady McGee and Danarrious Hughes had 15 points apiece. Angelo Sowell had seven points and Ja’Lann Broadfoot added six.
Lake girls 45, Mize 34
The Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Bulldogs and took an 11-point win on Thursday.
Lake led 10-6 at the end of the first and 23-10 at the half. Mize fought back in the third, outscoring Lake 16-9 to cut the lead to 32-26 at the end of the third. Lake then outscored Mize 13-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Laurel Breland led Lake with 10 points and five steals. Ameria Ervin had seven points, four steals and three assists while D’Nara Barton had seven points. Denetria Lay had six points while Tra’shaylah Wilson had five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Elixisaren Buckley had four points and six rebounds while Monica Pinkston had five blocks.
Mize boys 52, Lake 50
In a back and forth contest, the Bulldogs claimed a two-point win over the Hornets on Tuesday night.
Mize led 17-11 at the end of the first while Lake led 24-23 at the half. Lake outscored Mize 11-10 in the third to extend the lead to 35-33 going into the fourth. Mize outscored Lake 19-15 in the fourth to take the win.
Danarrious Hughes led Lake with 17 points, three rebounds and three assists while J.D. Evans had 11 points. Ja’Lann Broadfoot also had 10 rebounds for the Hornets.
Lake girls 42, Morton 34
The Lady Hornets used a big fourth period to overcome a first-half deficit and beat Morton on Friday night.
Morton led 10-8 at the end of the first and 26-18 at the half. Lake outscored Morton 9-6 in the third to cut the margin to 32-27. But the Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Panthers 15-2 in the fourth to take the win.
Laurel Breland led Lake with 12 points while Tra’shaylah Wilson had 12 points.
Morton boys 49, Lake 44
The Hornets lost another close contest as they dropped a five-point decision to Morton.
Lake led 9-7 at the end of the first before Morton used a 15-7 advantage in the second to led 22-16 at the half. Lake pulled within two, outscoring Morton 14-10 to make the score 32-30. Morton used a 17-14 advantage in the fourth to take the win.
Brady McGee led Lake with 13 points while Danarrious Hughes had nine points and Tahi Lay added eight points.
